The Shifting Landscape of Retail and the Role of SaaS Vendors

Our illustrious founder has bitten the bullet and plunged, tank top first, into the world of LinkedIn video content. You have to respect the grind.

Below is a (sadly, not glittery) transcript from his video blog series, the Tank Top Diaries.

“Good morning, everybody. I'm wearing a tank top, so this felt all glittery, really [Editor note: it’s ‘obligatory’, not glittery – but that doesn’t mean Jamie doesn't sparkle]. Today's thought is really just about the landscape of retailers that are failing.

Obviously, there are lots of them around at the moment – Ted Baker this morning or yesterday evening going into receivership in the UK, probably. And you know, Farfetch, Matches Fashion, there's a whole load of multi-brand, luxury businesses that haven't succeeded. Obviously, tech plays a part in some of those failures.

I think what's quite telling at the moment, as we talk to customers for some of the conferences coming up this summer, it's clear that, actually, the SaaS vendors are leaning into delivery more than they have done. And so there's certainly a question mark over the role of agency, the role of SI (systems integrator) moving forward in these great big transformation projects that carry a lot of risk.

You do start to think that the vendors, quite rightly, are going to take a bit more involvement and carry a bit more ownership. And they'll be forced to, I think.

I look forward to seeing what everybody thinks about that as we move into summer and some of the bigger composable conferences coming up.”

As a result, vendors and agencies that have traditionally targeted these big players may need to pivot their strategies. The key? Identifying and pursuing high-growth, mid-market opportunities in the D2C and media verticals.
